Babu Raoji Shah is the adopted son of late social activist Gangubai Kathiawadi who worked for the upliftment of sex workers in Kamathipura area of the city of Mumbai in Maharashtra in 1960s. Babu Raoji Shah came in to limelight after the controversial portayal of his mother in the Hindi crime movie ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ which was directed by Sanjay Leela Bansali. The film is based on the life of Gangubai Kathiawadi. It portrayed Gangubai as a prostitute which offended Babu Raoji Shah who claimed that his mother was a social activist. He had filed a petition against the film in the Bombay City Civil. He also filed a criminal complaint with regard to the offence for defamation.
