Popular Front hartal violence; Number of arrests exceeds 2,500; 13 more arrests recorded today

361 cases have been registered so far in the hartal held in Kerala by the Popular Front of India in protest against the NIA raids across the country. 13 more people were arrested today from different parts of the state in connection with the violence.

With this, the total number of people arrested has reached 2559.

The PFI damaged vehicles, hurled explosives and vandalised establishments across Kerala during a hartal over the arrest of its senior members by the NIA, even as the High Court stepped in to initiate suo motu contempt proceedings against the outfit and its state general secretary.

“Taking note of the illegal call for hartal’’, a division bench of the Kerala High Court noted that the flash strike was against its 2019 order which specified that any such action should not affect the rights of those unaligned with the protesters and must be carried out only after a seven-day notice.
