Online media services provide some relief when theaters are not open and people are reluctant to go to theaters. Services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hot Star are now available online. Censorship does not currently apply to them. However, the Supreme Court has accepted that all the content in it should be censored from now on.

However, the apex court has directed the Central government to issue guidelines as the court has limitations to intervene in the matter. Reports suggest that the central government will soon issue new guidelines.

There is a long-standing need for online services to be censored. Criticism that online platforms handle issues that are not relevant to society has been around for a long time.

Many traditional and right-wing organizations have already come forward with this demand. The Supreme Court is now taking an important decision on the public interest litigation filed by them.

The matter will soon come under the purview of the Central Government. The apex court has now said that the appropriate course of action will be decided by the central government. The matter comes under the purview of the Ministry of Information. Online platforms will no longer be censored on the sensorboard model if the need is met.
