Comprising of Australia’s eight premier research universities, the Group of Eight (Go8) has put forward easing out visa norms for Indian research students. The relaxed visa norms will result in research students from India and Australia, getting more opportunities for pursuing PhD in either country. While making a report of the programme, the Go8 recommended establishing a special class visa for researchers and PhD graduates.
Speaking about including more Indian PhD students in Australia, the Go8 CEO Vicki Thomson proposed a joint sponsorship programme between Indian companies and Australian companies. A 2016 report revealed that there was a 60 percent increase in the number of Indian PhD students enrolled in Australian Universities as compared to that of 2006.
