Controversy arose after a video of BJP candidate Madhavi Lata checking the identity of Muslim women voters at a polling station surfaced on Monday. The incident took place in Hyderabad. This video is now going viral on social media. Madhavi Lata is heard specifically asking Muslim women wearing burqas to remove their face veils for ID verification.
“Utaye aap (lift it up),” Lata is heard telling the women, gesturing to the curtain as they check their voter ID cards.
How many years ago did you get voter cards?” In the video, the BJP candidate is also seen asking the women again.
They also requested their Aadhaar cards for additional verification.
“I am a candidate. As per law, a candidate has the right to check ID cards without face mask.” Madhavi Latha said justifying her actions.
She also claimed that asking Muslim women to remove the burqa is not a big deal as she is also a woman.
“I am not a man, I am a woman. Very politely, I just requested them – can I see and check the ID cards. If someone wants to make a big issue about this, it means they are afraid. They said.

After the video of the incident went viral, a case was registered against Lata at the Malakpet police station
