Kozhikode vigilance special court has given 7 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000 to the former sub register Koyilandy Edakulam, PK Beena. The verdict produced by special Court judge KV Jayakumar is one of the most rigorous punishments of bribery given to a government official who is still in service. If not fined, she must serve seven months of further imprisonment.
The incident subject to the verdict took place on February 22, 2014. She has reportedly asked document writer P. Bhaskaran a sum of Rs 5,000 in order to complete his document registration procedure. If not given, he was reportedly threatened by the sub registrar of cancelling his document. Upon getting the instructions of the Vigilance department, the complainant has delivered the money to the sub registrar, who then was arrested by the vigilance department. She has been taken to the Kannur Central Jail. Currently working as a Chitty Officer at the District Registrar’s Office, PK Beena is been accused of bribery in another case.
