Facebook is responding to the expiration of the deadline given by the central government to social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to comply with India’s new IT rules. Facebook said in a statement that it intends to comply with the central government’s new IT rules.
However, the national media reported that a Facebook statement said that in-depth discussions were needed on some issues that require further government intervention. ‘IT will work to comply with the rules and improve efficiency. “Facebook is committed to being a place where people can express their opinions safely and freely,” he said.
In February, the Ministry of Electronics and Information directed social media to comply with the new IT rules in India. The deadline is May 25. It is estimated that the protection and status of social media will be lost if the new guidelines are not followed.
There are indications that there will be criminal proceedings for non-compliance with the rules. The main proposal put forward by the government was to appoint Compliance Officers from India for social media. Officers will be empowered to monitor posts etc. and remove them if necessary. In addition to social media, these recommendations also apply to OTT platforms.
