A wild elephant was hit by a Kanyakumari-Guwahati bound Express train at 3.15 am in Walayar, Palakkad. The 20-year-old female elephant died after the train hit her.
A young elephant which accompanied her also sustained injuries but rushed back to Vadassery hill with the herd of elephants.
Railway officials and forest department team reached the spot. It has been decided to bury the elephant here after the post-mortem.
