After facing severe backlash, the Kerala government on Wednesday decided to revoke its decision to raise the retirement age of employees in state-run Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to 60.
The state cabinet held on Wednesday took the decision as Opposition and youth organizations including DYFI affiliated to CPM expressed strong protest against the move.
Reports said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself put forward the suggestion to temporarily freeze the order. It is reported that the Finance Minister and the Chief Secretary have been entrusted with the further steps related to freezing the decision.
Last Saturday, the government issued an order to raise the retirement age from 58 to 60 in all public sector institutions under the state government. The decision was taken in consideration of the recommendation of the expert committee appointed in 2017 to set common standards for public sector institutions. Retirement age has been set at 60 on the grounds of unifying the retirement age in public sector institutions.
