Hashish oil was seized when the remanded accused was produced in court and brought back to jail. MDMA was seized from another suspect the day after he was brought to jail. These are only two recent incidents in Kakanad District Jail.
When the accused enter the jail, they undergo a thorough body search. Still, the question arises as to how the substance got inside. Infopark police registered a case in both these incidents but no substantive investigation was conducted.
Jail officials found 1.9 grams of hashish oil from Biju Francis, a native of Palluruthi, who is on remand in the district jail in the POCSO case. After being produced in the court and brought back and kept in the cell, the accused was caught on CCTV. It was found that intoxicants were being used during the surveillance conducted through the footage. When produced in court, the police concluded that it was given by friends. After this, the next incident took place when the drug was seized from inside the jail.
MDMA and cannabis were recovered from Sanal Kumar, who was arrested and remanded by the Kadawantra police in a theft case. Suspicious of the suspect’s behavior after arriving at the jail, the jail authorities found intoxicants and ganja when they checked. The intoxicants were found secretly hidden in the body.
Thrikakkara is becoming the main center of drug sales in the district. Most of the drug and ganja were seized from Thrikkakara itself. Meanwhile, the incidents of drug seizures from the district jail and remand prisoners are increasing.
