The Maharashtra government has decided to release 50 per cent of the inmates to jails across the state after the coronation cases reached 2,000. The decision was taken by the State Empowered Committee.

Bombay High Court Justice AA Syed, Additional Chief Secretary of State Home Department Sanjay Chahande, Maharashtra Director General Jails SN Pandey

According to the updates, inmates from prisons across the state will be released on temporary bail or parole. However, the time limit for the release of these detainees is not specified.

“This will significantly divide the 35,239 prisons and the 50 per cent prisons,” the committee said in a statement.

The development comes after more than 100 inmates and staff members at the Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai recently tested positive for Covid-19.
