New Delhi: The Election Commission has issued a notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for indirectly calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘bad omen’ in connection with India’s defeat in the World Cup cricket final.
A notice has been sent seeking an explanation of the incident. The notice says that an explanation should be given by Saturday evening. This is based on the complaint filed by the BJP.
In the notice, the Election Commission pointed out that there is a restriction under the law on making unsubstantiated allegations against political opponents.

Rahul Gandhi made the controversial remark while addressing an election campaign meeting in Rajasthan, which is preparing for assembly elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the ODI World Cup final against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Rahul Gandhi’s sarcasm was indirectly related to this. Rahul Gandhi’s joke was while addressing an election rally in Rajasthan’s Jalore.
During the rally, someone in the crowd shouted ‘Panotti’, (a word meaning unlucky or bad omen).
In response, Rahul laughed and said: ‘Han… panooty, panooty… our kids were playing well and winning, but when the bad omen came, the game was lost, the media is not pointing this out, Rahul said without mentioning Modi’s name.
