Sree Chithra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology has developed an Emergency Breathing Assist System (EBAS). It can function as a replacement system for several hours to several days until the ventilator is in place. The device is designed to meet national and international standards. The materials available in the country were used for construction of the equipment. Prof. Sarath, Vinod, Nagesh, Prof. Thomas Koshy, Prof. Manikandan were behind the design and technology of the device and handed over to Wipro 3D for further development and industrial production. The Emergency Breathing Assist System will be officially launched tomorrow by Sree Chitra Institute and Wipro 3D, named as Air bridge.

President of Sree Chitra, Dr. VK Saraswat will launch the Airbridge through video conferencing. The air valve mask (BVM) system allows the airbrush to regulate the volume and deliver oxygen to the patient’s body by controlling the amount of air it pumps in and out. It is also possible to adjust the tidal volume, the rate of breathing per minute, and the breath-to-breath ratio. These will be counted and displayed by the Air bridge when operating.

The device also comes with a warning and help request. This battery operated device that can be easily moved from one place to another. There is no need for the services of specially trained personnel to operate the airbrush and can function at relatively low operating costs. Healthcare workers, including nurses, can work effortlessly. Until the ventilator is available, airbrush can be used by ambulances, wards and ICUs for patients with Covid and other serious diseases. Even small hospitals that do not have oxygen plants can use the system with the help of oxygen cylinder when necessary.
