The central government has extended the free ration distribution scheme which was started in the country during the Covid period and continued for another year. Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that the central government has now decided to extend the project which was supposed to end by December 2022 till December 2023.

Piyush Goyal stated that it was decided to continue the project in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The minister added that the cost of the project would be Rs 2 lakh crore for one year.

A scheme with more than 80 crore beneficiaries was implemented in the name of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana in 2020. According to the National Food Security Amendment, the rate is Rs 3 per kg for rice and Rs 2 for wheat.
