Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar has been arrested in connection with the murder of junior national champion wrestler in a clash. Sushil was arrested by the Delhi Police from Punjab. Junior Sagar Rana was killed at a stadium in Delhi on April 4. Sushil then went into hiding for two weeks.
The clash took place on the night of May 4 in a parking lot outside the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. The stadium also houses the office of Sushil Kumar, a sports officer in the Delhi government. Junior players Sagar, Amit and Sonu had an argument with Rothak University students Prince Dalal, Ajay and Sushil Kumar.
Police said Prince and Ajay were residents of a house Sushil’s acquaintance near the stadium. By the time the police arrived, the attackers had left the place. Sagar was critically injured and later died at the hospital. The injured Sonu said that Sushil was also among the attackers. Prince was arrested earlier.
Two double-barreled guns and ammunition were recovered from him. The two SUVs recovered from the spot have been identified as belonging to Naveen Bali, a gang leader from Haryana. Police said Prince was linked to gangs. Sushil Kumar had told the news agency that the attackers were outsiders.
Sushil Kumar was summoned but went into hiding without appearing before the police. The Delhi Police has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of Sushil. Sushil and nine others have been charged with murder and criminal conspiracy. Sushilkumar won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
