NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has given permission to open grocery stores in Delhi for 24 hours, despite a national lock-down. Kejriwal said this after a second meeting with Lieutenant Governor Anil Beijal and other top officials.
Concerns have been raised about the availability of essential commodities such as milk, bread, fruits and vegetables. Before the closure, people were too busy buying these.
The chief minister said on Twitter that the government has decided to give permission for the shops to sell essential commodities. He added that no special permit or license is required for this.
Kejriwal said on Wednesday that the government should ensure the availability of medicines and other essential items. The government also decided to allow e-passes for institutions to deliver medicines, food and essential items to their homes. The CM also assured that those working in the health and media sectors will not be detained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that there was no need to worry about the availability of essential goods when the country announced the shutdown. However, the rumors that made it difficult to obtain were of concern to the public.
