Customs Department has uncovered a huge gold smuggling, which reached at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. Unlike previous instances in the state, this time the attempt was made through diplomatic baggage. Incidentally, this was one of the first attempts in the country to smuggle gold through diplomatic baggage. The incident took place through a diplomatic baggage that came to the Consulate of United Arab Emirates.
According to the usual practices, a diplomatic baggage will not be subjected to much checking at the airport. Reportedly, the checking was conducted this time, based on the secret information that the Customs department received. Grown suspicious of the baggage, officials checked the parcel, which resulted in the uncovering of several kilograms of gold. Officials have started conducting an investigation on this and more details are expected to get divulged in the coming days.
